Sophomore year my sweet friend Lara got me a bright pink fishing pole after what I can only imagine to be multiple expressions of my desire to go fishing in the Brazos River.  Perhaps I was homesick for childhood and fishing is associated with countless childhood memories?  Not sure.

-

Regardless, today was the first time I used the pole– nearly two and half years later.

-

As much as being outside by the river took me back to those childhood memories, my fishing skills did not come back to me.  After dropping part of the reel in the water, breaking the handle, and Clayton obsessing on how cruel we were being to the worms, you could say we were struggling.

-

The weather was perfect, but the real joy of today…

reminds me of why I love Waco.

Several little kids got to hang out with us and try to help us figure out our rod.  They supplied us with a pocket knife & encouragement and with extra line one little guy fashioned his own pole with a stick.  As he ran off he stuffed the bobber and the hook in his pocket, which has left me worried to death.  All the way up the stairs he kept turning around to wave and say thank you.  It’s the simple joys.  Really.

When we were leaving we were humble enough to realize we’d never be smart enough to fix our rod and the crew of kids were estatic that they were able to inherit the pink rod.  I hope the girl in her sweet dress doesn’t get in trouble for coming home with glow-in-the-dark worms.

-

Today was a highlight and a reminder to not cling so tightly to things.  I could have stored a tangled fishing pole in my closet for years before passing it along; I have  lots of such “tangled” things– books and clothes– which I should gift before it’s time to throw them away.

-

The children’s joy over gross worms and a tangled rod woke me up a bit and certainly made up for not catching a single fish.  Clayton claims we got some bites, but I think he was humoring me.

-

Regardless, we’re going back. For sure.

Ramblings.

It’s day 3 and I already forgot my retainer. The fear is real yet the discipline is weak.

The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.  Matthew 26:41, yeah?

-

Thankful for grace this morning.

-

Grace for those times my mouth runs off and I’m caught chasing after it with my brain.

Grace for those times my attitude is far less than pleasant and pretty spring flowers seems to shout, “we’re happy! Why aren’t you??”

And grace for far more that I’m willing to admit right now that my Father in heaven chooses to offer not based on merit but by His unconditional, unfaltering love.

-

Perhaps I’ll offer a little grace to myself too.

-

In other ramblings,

  • My half marathon is in FOUR days. My excitement is growing and my nervousness is FREAKING OUT.
  • I’ve had Mr. Snow snow cones 3 times this past week (in preparation for the race, you see). The first time this year was with buddies Nincy &Christabelle.
  • I want to spend every moment outside.
  • I watched the movie Bladerunner for class and the teacher asked if I were ok. I guess me burying my head in my arms triggered some alarm on his part.
  • I’ve been praying Psalm 23 each morning and each evening and it has changed how I live.
  • I played Twister for the first time since like 3rd grade.
  • I still accidently dress like Clayton and yes, we still LOVE Sonic (though now that I don’t drink Diet Coke it’s not quite the same. With 168,000 combinations I found a new favorite: Ocean Water)

  • I graduate in 51 days. Too much freaking out for one post or I’d freak out. maturity, Caroline. Maturity.

Goal of Valentine’s Day

Goal of Valentine’s Day:

Spend it with someone as goofy as possible.

The weirder they are, the more comfortable you become,

and then the weirder you get.

the weirder you get, the more weird they get.

It’s a perpetual state of weirdness.

and it’s oh so fun.

-

Happy Valentine’s Day.

-

be yourself.

with someone fun :]

Hot tea on a cold day?! Nah… Root beer floats!

Yeah, we’re living life on the edge. It’s the simple things, right?

Alright. Back to theology and lit papers.

Christmas Detox

Posted by on Dec 27, 2010 in Family, journey to marriage, The Backpack | 0 comments

Silver Dollar City has one thing right– going cold turkey on Christmas isn’t right or even possible.  One cannot go from being a festively-charged shopaholic with spurts of insane generosity and wearing a tacky sweater to pulling down the Christmas tree and listening to normal radio.

-

Not possible. Not fun. Borderline Depressing.

-

Silver Dollar City has a slow holiday detox, keeping the Christmas decorations up until New Years.

So, today I hit the post-Christmas chaos and made a few returns and then pretended like my favorite holiday didn’t just pass with life-size gingerbread men, frozen fingers and toes, Christmas carols, and Clayton.

Merry Christmas y’all, again.
Best wishes with Christmas withdrawals.
