Spinning Class for the Unathletic

Usually I have to trick myself into liking exercise.

Last year, if I ran 7 days in a row I got to buy new tennis shoes.  I made it to 6, but I bought them anyway (shhh).

I set unrealistic goals as if they will somehow motivate me.

I’ve tried accountability partners, but since I prefer people who aren’t intense, they turn out just like me and allow the weather and unknown forces dictate whether or not to be active.

I’ve made schedules and bought memberships and registered for teams, just to find myself worming out of the commitment I make.

But:::
There has been a miracle.

I have found an exercise I like.
I’ve been hesitant to admit this (because I certainly didn’t want accountability or questions about something I thought I might eventually dislike), but since it has endured a week (a very long time), the time has come to confess and proclaim this miracle.

Bear Cycle.

Since this is Baylor and everything gets Bear attached to it (Bear Trail, Beaerobics, Bearathon, Bear Den), Bear Cycle is an hour long cycling class.  Only if you go to Baylor do you not hear how ridiculously cheesy it is to have Bear Everything.  Regardless, I’m slightly addicted to Bear Cycle.brown_bear_3

My friend and I have been going at 6:15 a.m. and part of the addiction comes from the 2 hour break that comes right after the sweat.  It’s in the stillness of the morning with my mind fully alert.  The world is quiet and thus far, I’ve found I’m closest to the Lord in the moments in the black recliner and my coffee.

I want to say I’m at the place where I jump out of bed to meet with the Lord, but I cannot.  My mornings are painful, full of ducked eye contact, blank thoughts, and heavy eye-lids.  But, exercise, is a preparation for my body to realize it is day and day awaits.

Then my heart has time to be still… and not fall asleep.

Thank you Bear Cycle.  My prayer now, is that you don’t wear off.  There’s too much as stake.  Usher in the day with praise– with whatever it takes.morning-by-morning-new-mercies-i-see-stephen-shockley
